Organisation of Classes
Our classes are grouped into three phases, according to the ages of the children; the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for nursery and reception aged children, Key Stage One for children in years 1 and 2, then Key Stage Two for years 3 to 6. In Key Stage 2, we have lower and upper junior departments. Children are allocated to an appropriate class for their age - there are two classes for each year group.
In the EYFS we have a full time nursery class of 30 children and our 60 reception children are organised into two teaching groups, each with a teacher.
Policy for Special Educational Needs (SEN)
We recognise that some children will have additional learning needs and or disabilities. Through our SEN and Learning Policies we seek to ensure that identified barriers to learning are addressed. We take account of children’s different needs and make provision, where necessary, to support individuals or groups of children so that they can participate effectively in the curriculum. Our policy ensures that planning and assessment for children with learning needs and disabilities takes account of the type and extent of the difficulty experienced by the child. A senior teacher – the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) co-ordinates all aspects of our SEN work.
Monton Green comprises of three single storey buildings and is additionally resourced for up to 10 pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (ECHP) relating to Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) Pupils with Additional Learning Needs and/or disabilities are admitted in accordance with the Local Authority Admission Arrangements.
Our school receives additional resources to meet the needs of 10 children with Moderate learning Difficulties. Admission to this resourced provision is via the LA SEN Statement Panel.
The school’s policy for Special Educational Needs, its Learning Policy and Equalities Policy are available at the school office or electronically by e-mail/website. At our school, girls and boys have equal access to all areas of the curriculum and we consider their interests and prior abilities when planning learning contexts. We aim to cultivate respect for all people, irrespective of race, gender, cultural, economic and other differences.
Monton Green is a non-denominational Community Primary School. Religious education is delivered in line with the Salford Agreed Syllabus. Children learn to behave kindly and thoughtfully towards others and to respect religious convictions. Parents have a right to withdraw their child from Religious Education and from the Daily Act of Collective Worship. Parents should contact the head teacher to discuss this matter. Provision will be made for children who are withdrawn from these activities.
The school has links with both St Paul’s and Monton Methodist Church as these are located close to the school.
The School Curriculum
At Monton Green, provision is made to deliver all National Curriculum Subjects. The curriculum at KS1 and KS2 comprises English, Mathematics and Science along with Computing, History, Geography, Art and Design, Design Technology, Music, PE plus Religious Education (RE) and Personal, Social Health and Citizenship Education (PSHEC). French is also taught in KS2.
Children’s learning is organised under umbrella themes or topics which help children to acquire both learning skills and subject knowledge. Long and medium term plans ensure continuity and progression for all children.
Assessment and Testing
Teachers assess children’s learning in an on-going way through dialogue in lessons and through their marking. Assessments are recorded in a number of different ways and this information is used by teachers to plan the next steps of learning for individuals, groups and whole classes. We use the DfE Optional tests to provide additional assessment information and children in Y2 and Y6 take part in Statutory Assessment tests (SATs) in the summer term each year.
Information about children’s learning and progress is shared with parents at out termly parent/teacher meetings.
Sex and Relationships Education (SRE)
This is delivered through both the Science and PHSEC curriculum for which we use the JIGSAW scheme of work. We aim to provide children with opportunities to express feelings and emotions and develop responsible attitudes in their everyday lives. The children are taught about loving, caring relationships and they learn about their bodies, which in year 5 and 6, includes human reproduction. Older children have opportunities to learn about different types of family groupings in our diverse society. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Sex and Relationships lessons; however the Science curriculum is compulsory. Information regarding SRE is available from your child's classteacher.
Parents should discuss a decision to withdraw their child from SRE lessons with the Head teacher.
Behaviour and Anti Bullying Policy
At Monton Green, our aim is for children to be self-disciplined, well mannered, tolerant and respectful to each other and to adults. We encourage children to take pride in their work, care for resources and belongings and to contribute to the life of the school and the community. Class and School council meetings provide children and teachers with a forum for dialogue about aspects of school life and enable any problems to be solved collectively.
Boundaries are set, rules are agreed and discipline is firmly rooted within good classroom management and organisation. Emphasis is placed on positive management systems – children are praised and rewarded for good behaviour.
When necessary, sanctions are available – which are incremental and applied consistently. When children are experiencing difficulties, we always try to work in partnership with parents and other agencies. We ask that all parents and children sign the Home School Agreement when joining our school as this formalises a commitment to work collaboratively. Our behaviour and Anti Bullying Policy is available on request from the school office.
How can parents support children’s learning?
We recognise that you as parents and carers are of crucial importance in your child’s learning and progress and we will encourage and help you to become involved in his or her education. Newsletters are sent our electronically every half term, which give details of the work to be covered in each department.
From Y1 onwards, we set written English and Maths homework to reinforce and practice work covered in class, so that you can see what children have been doing in school. Please supervise and give your child help when needed and let us know if they are finding something too difficult. Of course practising basic skills, such as multiplication tables and weekly spellings are also important ways in which you can help your child.
Most parents are keen to help their child by reading with them – ideally this should be carried out on a daily basis. All children are given a home/school reading log, and although we value your comments, all that is required is your signature and date. Teachers are always on hand to answer questions and offer advice.
Extra activities on offer at the school
We feel it is important to give children opportunities to explore their gifts and talents through after school activities. Details of clubs on offer are publicised each term. There is usually a small charge to cover materials or the cost of expert coaching.
Private instrumental tuition is available during the school day from Year 1 onwards. Individual or small group lessons can be arranged for piano, recorder or guitar. Fees are charged in a termly basis by the tutors and costs depend upon whether the lesson is taken as part of a group or as an individual. Further information can be obtained from the school office.
Child Care Clubs
We offer before and after school child care on the school premises. Our Early Birds and After School Club are led by school staff and are organised in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory requirements. The clubs are open to all children on roll at the school. Details of charges and how to register are available from the school office.
A safe learning environment
We require parents’ help to ensure children arrive at school and leave safely. Access to the school is via a public footpath at the side of the school site. Please do not walk or drive up the school drive at any time as this can be dangerous.
School staff take responsibility for the children from 8.50 a.m. each day. The doors are opened at this time and children are welcomed into school by their class teacher. Punctuality is very important and lessons start promptly at 9.00 am. Children arriving after this time must report to the school office so that they can be registered for the day.
At the end of the day, children should be collected by a known adult from their classroom exit at 3.30 p.m. Please let us know if your collection arrangements change. We need written notification of a parent’s permission for older children to walk home on their own.
We endeavour to make sure our school is safe and secure and we operate several security procedures to support this. A door security system controls access to both the main building and the annex. Please let us know in advance if you need to collect your child for an appointment and needs to be collected from school during the day.
Children are expected to attend school regularly and to be at school on time. We ask parents to contact us as soon as possible if for any reason their child cannot come to school. As a safety measure we will ring you if a child has not arrived by 9.30 a.m. and we do not know why they are absent. Where unexplained absence or lateness becomes a problem we may refer the matter to the Education Welfare Officer.
Holidays in term time are discouraged because they can disrupt children’s learning. Permission for term time absence for a holiday must be sought in writing. Term time holidays are not authorised unless there are very exceptional circumstances and your child's attendance is above 95%. . A holiday schedule is on this website and it is also available at the school office.
Meals, snacks and drinks in school
School meals are cooked on the premises by Citywide Catering. A selection of hot and cold foods is available each day and a three week menu, which complies with healthy school food standards, is followed. Special dietary requirements can be catered for. Milk and water are available at lunchtime. Your child may bring a packed lunch from home if you prefer. All children eat together, irrespective of their meal type.
Milk is available and is ordered on a termly basis. Children are allowed to bring a piece of fruit to eat at break times. They can pre-order toast, which is available at morning break. Please do not send sweets, chocolate or fizzy drinks into school.
Children need to be able to drink water regularly as this keeps them alert and helps with learning. Water bottles can be purchased from the school office and cost £1.50 each. Water fountains are also available in school
